A vanity publishing outfit is set to rebrand with a scheme that appears to be aimed at parting writers from their money.
PublishAmerica have, for some time, been listed by many 'scam alert' sites. Their reputation for unfair contracts, aggressive marketing to authors, lack of quality control, late or non payment and over-stated distribution deals can be discovered with a simple check through any search engine.
The company recently announced a new imprint called Independence Books. Those who already use PublishAmerica are invited to switch to Independence Books. An outfit the company insists is not listed as a POD publisher.
To switch to the new imprint, existing PublishAmerica writers must go to the company webshop and buy at least seven copies of their own book.
Their title will receive a new ISBN code and be listed on the PublishAmerica website as being under the Independence Books imprint. However, the site adds, "the title remains under contract with PublishAmerica."
The scheme was picked up yesterday by Writers Beware, a website which alerts aspiring authors to publishing scams.
